There are 1,500 positions advertised, but so far only 890 teachers with basic training have applied, the Ministry of Education said on Monday in its blog. In addition, there were 33 incompletely qualified applicants, most of whom had not completed their legal clerkship, and 462 lateral entrants. The "Sächsische Zeitung" first reported on the shortage. The recruitment process will continue until the start of the new school year.
"There can be many reasons for the low number of fully qualified applicants. First and foremost, the increased number of first-year students from around 2000 in the 2016/2017 winter semester to 2500 in the 2017/2018 winter semester cannot yet be accounted for with regard to the duration of the teacher training course affect the applicant market," the blog said. The special Corona regulations on the duration of studies at universities could also have led to fewer students currently applying for the preparatory service and completing it successfully.
Among the fully qualified applicants, 399 want to go to Leipzig and 213 to Dresden, according to the ministry. 115 teachers applied for the Chemnitz region, 93 for the Zwickau area and only 70 for the East Saxon area. "However, the interest of applicants does not match the need for teachers. This becomes particularly clear when looking at East Saxony. There are 207 vacancies for 70 applicants. But demand and interest in applicants do not match in other regions either."
