Saxony: Students demand better protection against harassment

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The Conference of Saxon Student Unions (KSS) has demanded better protection against discrimination and sexual harassment at universities in the Free State. The KSS said on Sunday in Leipzig that those affected had no legal recourse to take action against perpetrators. The current General Equal Treatment Act applies to employees, but not to students. The KSS has pointed out this loophole several times. Numerous studies and surveys have shown that more than half of the students have already been affected by sexual harassment or discrimination in everyday university life.

This Monday, the state parliament wants to deal with the topic in a public hearing. The left had submitted a corresponding application. "In such a strongly hierarchical structure as in universities, there is a particular danger of discrimination, not least because of the dependency relationships," explained Fay Uhlmann, KSS officer for feminism. The KSS pointed out that several federal states have now legally enshrined protection against discrimination for students.
