Saxony: Zwickau gets flood protection wall for 1.5 million euros

Zwickau (dpa / sn) - The Zwickau district of Bockwa should be better protected against flooding of the Mulde. The construction of a flood protection wall on the right bank of the Zwickauer Mulde began on Monday, as the state dam administration announced on Monday. The work should be completed by the end of May 2023 and will cost around 1.5 million euros. Funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Saxony flow into the project.

A 280 meter long cantilever retaining wall is being built, which can be raised with mobile flood protection elements in an emergency. The drainage system of federal highway 93 is to be integrated into the protective system. The flood protection system is dimensioned for a flow of 510.6 cubic meters per second from the Zwickauer Mulde. This value corresponds to a flood event in the Zwickauer Mulde, which statistically can occur on average once every 100 years.
