Thuringia: Again protests against the consequences of the Ukraine war

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to the police, thousands of people again took to the streets in Thuringia on Monday evening against the consequences of the Ukraine war in Germany. A police spokesman said in the evening that the protests were "uninterrupted" and without major incidents. The exact evaluation of the number of participants is still ongoing.

There were demonstrations in Gera, Jena, Erfurt and smaller towns. At least in Eisenach, reporters from the dpa reported on a manageable demonstration of around 100 people. There, the AfD had a rally under the motto "First our country! Life must be affordable!" organized in the marketplace. Among the speakers was former GDR opposition figure Angelika Barbe.

According to the police, around 38,000 people took part in a total of 42 meetings in the Free State on Monday last week. That was about 10,000 more than on Monday two weeks ago.

The protests against the measures to combat the corona pandemic, the consequences of the Ukraine war and high inflation have recently gained ground, especially in eastern Germany. According to police estimates, more than 100,000 people demonstrated on the Day of German Unity at dozens of rallies in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
