Altenburg (dpa/th) - Altenburg will not get the planned climate pavilion because the area provided for it is contaminated with contaminated sites. A spokesman for the Ministry of the Environment said that during the assessment before the construction work began, an oil smell was detected on the fallow area. In order not to take any risks, there should be events on climate protection and sustainability in the summer instead of in the pavilion at various other locations in the city.
The responsible district office in Altenburger Land announced that it can be assumed that the load came from the underfloor tanks of a former gas station. However, under certain conditions, it is possible to set up the pavilion temporarily, said the head of the nature and environmental protection department in the district office, Birgit Seiler.
But that is out of the question for the organizers, as a planted outdoor area was also planned, said a spokesman. "And the garden and the smell of oil just don't go together." But he also sees the new situation as an opportunity to try out other event formats in Altenburg. Since 2017, the ten-metre-high pavilion has hosted lectures, workshops and exhibitions in a different city in Thuringia every summer.
