Thuringia: candidate for the Greens chair withdraws application

Walldorf (dpa/th) - One of the two applicants for the party chairmanship of the Thuringian Greens is withdrawing his candidacy. After careful consideration, he would not apply for the post, said Bundeswehr Captain Matthias Kaiser on Saturday at the sidelines of a state delegates' conference of the Greens in Walldorf near Meiningen. In the past few days, he had come to the realization that he was the wrong applicant at the time, the 44-year-old justified his decision.

On Saturday afternoon, a successor is being sought for the previous Green Party leader Bernhard Stengele, who has headed the Ministry of Energy and the Environment in Thuringia since the beginning of February.

Kaiser, who has been a member of the Greens since 2019 and, according to his own statements, was a CDU member for about ten years, was long considered the only candidate to succeed Stengele. Kaiser announced that he would continue to work as district chairman of the Greens in Gotha and get involved in the party.

A day before the election, a second candidate had applied. The 27-year-old student and organic beekeeper Max Reschke from the Weimarer Land announced his candidacy. Other candidates can register spontaneously before the election.
