Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia's SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Hey has warned the opposition CDU against making common cause with the AfD in the budget committee. The Christian Democrats must be clear about what it means to shape a budget together with the AfD, Hey said on Wednesday in Erfurt. "I think you can set up the next crisis team in Berlin with Friedrich Merz," said Hey.
In Thuringia, intensive negotiations have been going on for weeks about a budget for the coming year. Recently, however, talks have stalled. The background is that the coalition of Left, SPD and Greens does not have its own majority in Parliament and is dependent on four votes from the opposition.
The CDU wants to achieve numerous changes to the current draft budget. Hey signaled willingness to compromise. "We are quite willing to say that the community family should be given more support." At the same time, he warned against wanting to cut funding programs that are intended to strengthen democracy, especially in Thuringia, where "democracy is faltering".
