Thuringia: Left: need for action at right-wing events

Apolda (dpa/th) - According to Katharina König-Preuss (left), member of the state parliament, municipalities need more help to prevent the use of public spaces for right-wing events. You should be better informed by the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior about the corresponding legal options, said König-Preuss on Saturday in Apolda of the German Press Agency. Although there is a handout for the municipalities, it is a few years old.

The background is the federal congress of the AfD youth organization Junge Alternative this weekend in the town hall of Apolda. According to a report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the correctional institution has been an "observation object (suspected case)" since the beginning of 2019. This means that the domestic secret service has the organization in its sights and can, under certain conditions, monitor communications, recruit informants or use other intelligence means to check whether suspicions of anti-constitutional activities are confirmed.

The present handout does not sufficiently take into account how to deal with parties that are targeted by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, said König-Preus. At the JA congress on Saturday, AfD national chairman Tino Chrupalla and the head of the Thuringian AfD state association, Björn Höcke, spoke. He pointed out that the Thuringian AfD was "often a guest" in the Apolda town hall. The state association is being observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution because of right-wing extremist tendencies.
