According to a media report, Twitter is revising its guidelines for permanently blocking users. The service has investigated whether there are other ways to replace the ban as the harshest punishment for rule violations, the Financial Times reported, citing several people familiar with the situation.
This move may be related to bringing the practices in line with Elon Musk's vision for the social media platform. Because the Tesla boss wants to buy the short message service for 44 billion dollars and had already promised changes to the practices for moderating content on Twitter in May.
For example, Musk, who describes himself as a free speech advocate, said he would lift the Twitter ban on former US President Donald Trump. However, according to the FT report, a change in company policy is unlikely to pave the way for Trump's return to the platform. Because Twitter is not considering reversing bans that the platform had imposed for violating its policy against incitement to violence.
According to the newspaper, the platform is reviewing areas where it believes Twitter may have banned users for less serious violations, such as disseminating misleading information. "Our core principles - choice and control, transparency, legitimacy and fairness - have guided our work for years, and as the public debate evolves, so will our approach," a Reuters Twitter spokesman said.
