Used car check: Mazda CX-5 - reliable and durable SUV

It shouldn't be too big, but not too small either. Not too expensive, but reliable and of high quality: Many people want something like this from a compact SUV, such as the CX-5 from Mazda. How does it fare as a used vehicle?

At Mazda, the CX-5 ranks below the SUV flagship CX-60 launched in summer 2022. This is an SUV that is still powered exclusively by combustion engines and just about fits into the compact class. As is typical of the brand, it has an idiosyncratic design and is considered a competitor to cars such as the VW Tiguan, Ford Kuga or Opel Grandland. In the main inspection (HU) there is also little criticism.

Model history

Mazda has had the CX-5 since 2012. The first generation underwent a facelift for the 2015 model year and was replaced in 2017 by the current edition. The Japanese manufacturer sent these for model year 2021 for facelift.

body variants

As an SUV, the five-door CX-5 has a taller body but is comparatively long for its class. There are no variants in the design.

Dimensions (according to ADAC)

1st generation: 4.56 m x 1.84 m x 1.67 m (LxWxH); Trunk volume: 503 l to 1620 l;

2nd generation: 4.55 m to 4.56 m x 1.84 m to 1.85 m x 1.68 m (LxWxH); Trunk volume: 506 l to 1620 l.

Strengthen

Above all, the outstanding design convinces the customers. The chassis is considered tight, there is enough space for families of four. At the HU, drive shafts and steering prove to be almost free of defects.

Indicators, low beam and rear lights are also not a cause for concern, as are most of the brake components and the exhaust. "Overall, it is considered a reliable and durable car," writes the "Auto Bild TÜV Report 2022".

weaknesses

But there are flaws. The CX-5 very often drives up to the first and second HU with worn brake discs. The front lighting is then already complained about more often than average.

When the vehicle is seven years old, the axle suspension, springs and dampers are increasingly being criticized for the third general inspection. Old models in particular also fall through the emissions test.

breakdown behavior

The ADAC places the Mazda bestseller in good positions in its breakdown statistics; only candidates from the first year 2013 land in the middle. The only breakdown: wrong oil pressure (2013 and 2014).

The engine

1st generation: petrol engine (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 118 kW/160 hp to 141 kW/191 hp; Diesel (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 110 kW/149 hp and 129 kW/175 hp;

2nd generation: petrol engine (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 118 kW/160 hp to 143 kW/194 hp.
