War in Ukraine Yana Rykhlitska, the 'angel' of Bakhmut, dies

She was 29 years old and was killed in a firefight by Russian troops near Bakhmut, where she worked as a paramedic in the 93rd Kholodny Yar Brigade. It has been the Ukrainian Defense Ministry itself that has confirmed the death of Yana (Yara) Rykhlitska, through a Twitter message.

"She was evacuating the wounded when she was hit in the shooting. Yana was a true hero, ready to risk her life to help others," the Ministry's message, accompanied by several photos of Yana, read.

Yana was known as "the angel of the Ukrainian troops." An insurance company worker, according to the newspaper 'Ukrainska Pravda', Yana decided to join the Ukrainian Army at the beginning of the invasion to work as a doctor in Bakhmut, in a stabilization center, they are places where the wounded are bandaged and treated before being transferred.

"This is a dark day for all the tactical medics, tactical instructors and soldiers she helped. We will take revenge. Calmly, with a cold anger inside, we are doing our job," volunteer Valerii Bahynskyi writes in the Ukrainian newspaper cited above.

Yana's friends reported in other media that the young woman "risked her life to help the injured." Her parents refused to receive financial aid and asked anyone who wanted to make a donation to the Ukrainian Army in memory of her daughter.

In Bakhmut, the most crucial battle of the Ukrainian war is being fought these days. Russians and Ukrainians have been fighting for weeks in this city in Donbas. The battle may severely degrade the best forces in the Wagner Group and deprive Russia of some of its most effective and hardest-to-replace shock troops, according to the latest report from the Institute for the Study of War.
