Ways to climate neutrality: Hydrogen pipeline planned from Wilhelmshaven to Cologne

Green hydrogen plays a central role in climate neutrality. In the future, hydrogen produced in Wilhelmshaven will be transported to Cologne via a pipeline. The network operators Gasunie and Thyssengas are now presenting the first cornerstones of their plans.

A pipeline around 400 kilometers long is to transport hydrogen from the coastal region of Wilhelmshaven to the Rhine-Ruhr region from 2028. The transmission system operators Gasunie and Thyssengas published the first cornerstones of their plans. According to this, the line is to be built in two sections between Wilhelmshaven and Wesseling near Cologne, largely by repurposing existing gas transport lines. The pipeline is intended to be connected to existing and planned projects, most notably the Hyperlink pipeline project and the Get H2 infrastructure project.

The transported hydrogen is to be produced in the coastal region of Wilhelmshaven or imported from Norway, among other places. The companies have applied to the European Commission to classify the two sections as so-called projects of common interest (PCI). This would make it possible to speed up the process and obtain funding.

Hydrogen should play a central role in the planned conversion of the economy towards climate neutrality. Produced "green" from renewable energies, it should primarily serve as an energy source. In steel production, it should replace coal and coke and thus avoid large amounts of greenhouse gases.
