'Run, Hide, Fight': Three dead in Michigan shooting

In the US state of Michigan, a man opens fire in a university hall. After the first shots, another attack occurs at a different location on campus. Three people die. The alleged perpetrator is found dead.

At least three people were shot dead at the University of Michigan and others were injured and taken to the hospital. A gunman opened fire in a hall of the university on Monday evening, the police said. Everyone on the university campus in the city of East Lansing was told to get to safety.

According to the police, after the first shots, there was a second attack at another location on campus. The media, citing a university spokesman, reported at least one fatality, and the police also said several were injured.

The alleged perpetrator was found with a "self-inflicted gunshot wound" outside the university campus, police said at a press conference. No information was given on the man's identity. A motive for the crime is also not known at this time. Police believe the shooter acted alone. There is no longer any danger to the public.

"Run, hide, fight," said the university's first warning to students and employees. If possible, you should move away from the danger, otherwise entrench yourself. If both are not possible, one should defend oneself, it was said in explanation. The injured were taken to a hospital, police said. Several buildings have been evacuated.

The University of Michigan is attended by more than 50,000 students according to the official website. The campus therefore extends over more than 21 square kilometers.
