Steppenwolf adds ensemble member

Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater has added a new ensemble member: the Chicago-based actor Namir Smallwood is the latest to be given the prestigious nod.

Originally from Newark, New Jersey, Smallwood, 34, currently can be seen in the Steppenwolf for Young Adults production of "Monster." He also appeared in the Northlight Theatre production of "Charm," which was staged at Steppenwolf. Other notable work includes performances in "The Lost Boys of Sudan" at Victory Gardens and "The Grapes of Wrath" at the Gift Theatre.

Smallwood, who trained at the University of Minnesota, was one of the Tribune's "Hot New Faces" of 2016, an annual feature in the newspaper that recognizes rising Chicago talent.

The storied Steppenwolf ensemble has been growing apace under new artistic director Anna D. Shapiro, who has emphasized Chicago-based actors.

Smallwood becomes the 48th member of the ensemble.
