In autumn, the leaves just trickle down from the trees - and also end up in the gutters. The leaves can collect there, rainwater no longer drains off. These tips make cleaning the gutter easier.
A scrutinizing look out of the skylight often brings clarity. If leaves have accumulated in the gutter, they have to be removed. Otherwise it can happen that the drain and downpipes become clogged.
Anyone who thinks that a little leaf can't be that bad is already making the first mistake. A few sheets of paper are sometimes enough for a blockade, warns the spokeswoman for the Central Association of the German Roofing Trade (ZVDH). A thick layer of leaves is even as waterproof as plastic wrap, explains the NRW consumer advice center.
The result: the accumulated rain finds other ways and can cause expensive water damage, for example on the facade or thermal insulation. Mold can also develop this way. In the worst case, the gutter can even burst in frost.
Such damage can be avoided by using special grids from which the leaves slip, according to the consumer advice center. Nevertheless, it must be checked and cleaned regularly - especially if large trees are nearby. If the gutter is not cleaned for several years, holes and cracks can even appear. Owners should do this themselves or hire a specialist once or twice a year, according to the Haus und Grund association.
If you dare to climb higher eaves yourself, you should be careful how you use tools and position the ladder. "Copper channels, for example, are susceptible to damage from scratches due to the soft material, but dents and bending are also possible," says Claudia Büttner from the ZVDH. With PVC gutters there is even a risk of breakage.
When cleaning the gutter, you can simply remove leaves, moss and other dirt with your hand or a small shovel, recommends Haus und Grund. For example, you can use a pipe cleaning spiral for the downpipes.
Those who do not like climbing the ladder can work from the ground or from the window with a telescopic pole. The ZVDH advises wearing tear-resistant rubber gloves, because the risk of infection from dead birds or bird droppings should not be underestimated. Protective masks against dust are also advisable. For do-it-yourselfers there are now also attachments for high-pressure cleaners, gutter shovels and brushes and other special tools.
