Farewell to Uwe Seeler: The date and place for the funeral service are known

On July 21, 2022, at the age of 85, Uwe Seeler (1936-2022) closed his eyes forever. Anyone who would like to say goodbye to Hamburg's biggest football idol can attend the funeral service on August 10th. It will take place at 2 p.m. in the Volksparkstadion, as the Senate of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg wrote in a statement.

The event will be "prepared in close coordination with the family and with the participation of the Hamburger Sportverein (HSV) and the German Football Association (DFB)," it says. All citizens who would like to take part in the funeral service will have access to the stadium from 1 p.m.

It is not known when and where Uwe Seeler's burial will take place. According to the announcement, only the closest family members are present at the funeral.

The death of Uwe Seeler has triggered a wave of grief in the football world and across Germany. Probably no one stood for Hamburger SV as much as Seeler. He played for the club for around 19 years and was German champion with HSV in 1960 and cup winner in 1963. Uwe Seeler, who captained the German national football team to the legendary World Cup final at Wembley in 1966, was also named Footballer of the Year three times. For the DFB-Elf he scored 43 times in 72 international matches.
