“Mascus. Men who hate women”, on France.tv Slash: an attempt to approach the “masculinist” movement

“Stop letting yourself be emasculated by girls! » This statement is called "masculinist", from the movement born in the 1970s in the United States and which believes that feminism then the movement

Journalist Pierre Gault investigated for nine months these males who dream of being alpha, whom he spotted on the Internet and on social networks. If his documentary begins with lightness, it continues with increasing dramaturgy to lead to the worst.

Of the 150,000 influencers identified in France in June 2023, the journalist identified 103 masculinists. He contacted around fifteen of them and examined the content published by some of them, including Killian Sensei (186,500 subscribers on YouTube), Hugo RF (44,000 followers on Instagram), Léo Psychologue… At the same time as his infiltration of the movement, he questioned a feminist researcher and activist who has been working on the subject for fifteen years, Stéphanie Lamy, who helped him decipher the different trends.

Two currents are dominant: the MGTOW, for “men going their own way”, who display their superiority over women, and the “incel”, involuntary celibates, rejected by the fairer sex. “Yes, somewhere, we can say that they are afraid for their balls,” comments the researcher before bursting out laughing and asking, facing the camera: “Are you okay, was that scientific enough? » A lightness of tone which does not suggest anything to come. Pierre Gault will first take a course in “La Meute”, taught by the influencer Azurr – 21 years old, handsome guy with the look of a guru, and the only one to have agreed to receive the director.

The latter then interviewed a former “incel”, Gaël, who will, with courage, tell how, as a mocked high school student, it all started for him with a search – “how to pick up a girl”. He will go so far as to become radicalized, before racist content triggers him.

The film goes to the next level with the video of Jean-Marie Corda declaring his admiration for Anders Behring Breivik, killer of 77 people on July 22, 2011, 8 murdered in Oslo, and 69 young people on the island of Utoya.

Masculinism can lead to drama. The killing perpetrated by Elliot Rodger (6 dead on May 23, 2014 in Santa Barbara, California) is thus presented as the first “symbol of “incel” revenge”; and the first masculinist murder in France was dated January 29, 2020, when Mickaël Philetas killed his ex-partner, Mélanie Ghione, with eighty stab wounds. “A woman who acts crazy on you must not leave alive,” assured the videographer shortly before committing his crime.
