Show your leg: The best alternatives to shaving

Smooth legs are a must for many women, especially in summer. After all, shorts, summer dresses and short skirts should really come into their own. But shaving is no longer an option for some women. As fast and uncomplicated as the procedure is, the result does not last long. The unwanted hairs are often visible again after two days and the whole thing starts all over again. Dry, irritated skin and ingrown hairs are among the unwelcome consequences of shaving. Here are a few hair removal methods that are also suitable for sensitive skin and strong hair growth.

Waxing is one of the most popular methods because the result can last up to two weeks. With the increasing number of applications, the hairs become fewer and grow back much more slowly and softer. The warm wax method, in which the liquid wax mass is partially applied to the skin with a wooden spatula or a practical roll-on, is particularly effective.

Sugaring may sound like Anglo-Saxon origins, but it is a very old method from Egypt. With sugaring, the hair is removed with the help of a sugar paste - also called halawa - with the direction of hair growth. The advantage over waxing, for example, is that the hair grows less with this method and it also causes less skin irritation. This applies in particular to sensitive areas such as the armpits, the facial area or the genital area.

The wax is particularly effective when heated, as the heat (be sure to test the heat level beforehand!) opens the skin pores, making it easier to remove hair. As soon as the wax has become cold and hard, it is pulled off with a quick, jerky movement against the direction of growth. However, the method has one major disadvantage: it hurts. In order to get an optimal result, the hair must be allowed to grow for at least twelve days before the first application.

The IPL and laser methods are the most modern hair removal techniques, which should definitely be carried out by a dermatologist or a trained cosmetician. Their advantage is that the hair is permanently removed. With the IPL method, an intense, pulsating light is used to destroy the hair roots. The disadvantage: it requires several sessions, which take place at intervals of six to eight weeks.

Lasering works in a similar way, but completely destroys the hair roots. Six to eight sessions are usually sufficient for laser hair removal treatment. With both methods, the skin is cooled during the treatment, which reduces pain. Anyone considering permanent hair removal should seek professional advice from a dermatologist beforehand.

Depilatory creams should always be used with caution, because they are real chemicals that are highly aggressive and are not suitable for every skin type. To avoid any allergic reactions, you should test the cream on a small area of your body before using it for the first time. They usually contain thiolactic acid and salts of thioglycolic acid. These substances attack the hair structure by breaking the keratin bonds. The hair on the surface of the skin dissolves and falls off.
