Five more years: Xi Jinping confirmed for third term

China's Communist Party anchors Xi Jinping's ideology and leadership even more deeply in its constitution and demands unconditional loyalty. Contrary to previous term limits, he can be elected to the top for a further five years.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has been confirmed as secretary-general for a third five-year term. At its first plenary session, the new Central Committee of the Communist Party in Beijing voted, as expected, for the 69-year-old to continue as leader. He is thus disregarding previously respected age and term limits.

At the end of its week-long session on Saturday, the party congress, which only takes place every five years, anchored Xi Jinping's ideology and his permanent leadership role even more deeply in the party constitution and demanded unconditional loyalty.
