Warren Beatty’s Son Stephen Ira Reacts To His Father’s ‘La La Land’ Slip-up: ‘Mistakes Happen!’

Veteran actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway made a major mistake while presenting the best picture award at the Oscars. The 79-year-old actor mistakenly announced “La La Land” as the winner when in fact the winner was “Moonlight.”

It wasn’t entirely Beatty’s fault. After all, he was handed the wrong envelope before presenting the Academy Award. His envelope read, ‘Emma Stone, “La La Land.”’ Beatty explained the mishap onstage after it was discovered, “I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said, ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

In fact, before announcing the award, Beatty exchanged a look with Dunaway before announcing “La La Land” as the winner. It was obvious that the artists were confused over the contents of the card.

Stephen Ira, Beatty’s son, reacted to his father’s goof-up on Twitter, “Proud of my dad for his grace! It’s life, stuff happens. Showbiz!” He later added, “I think it was just a mix up! Mistakes happen, especially in a live show.”

Needless to say, Beatty’s announcement to the wrong winner quickly led to his comparison with Miss Universe host Steve Harvey who announced the incorrect winner of the beauty pageant in 2015.

The host of this year’s Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, attempted to add some humor to the situation by drawing comparisons between Beatty’s announcement to Harvey’s announcement of Miss Universe. “Guys, this is very unfortunate what happened,” the comedian said, “Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this. I would like to see you get an Oscar anyway — why can’t we just give out a whole bunch of them?”

The cast and crew of “La La Land” were already on stage holding the award when the error was discovered.
