Giants' 4th-round pick drops 10 spots due to walkie-talkie penalty

The illegal use of a walkie-talkie by Giants coach Ben McAdoo last season caused the team's fourth-round draft pick to drop 10 spots.

The NFL announced the compensatory picks for this year's draft on Friday. The Giants weren't in position to receive any comp picks because they made major free-agent acquisitions last offseason, but their fourth-round pick had been unsettled.

The Giants' fourth-round pick was moved to the end of the round as part of the NFL's penalty for McAdoo illegally using a walkie-talkie on the sideline to communicate with quarterback Eli Manning during a 10-7 win over the Cowboys in Week 14. The pick was to be moved after the fourth-round comp picks, but it couldn't drop more than 12 spots from where the Giants finished in the draft order.

The Giants had the 23rd pick in the fourth round (No. 130 overall) before the penalty. They now will select No. 140 overall after comp picks by the Bengals and Browns at the end of the fourth round.

The Giants were fined $150,000 and McAdoo was fined $50,000 in addition to the draft penalty.

Comp picks are awarded to a team losing more or better comp free agents than it acquires in the previous year. Comp picks, which are inserted starting after the third round, are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.

The Giants' free agent signings of defensive end Olivier Vernon (Dolphins), cornerback Janoris Jenkins (Rams) and defensive tackle Damon Harrison (Jets) helped land their former teams comp picks. All three of those players signed lucrative contracts with the Giants and then earned All-Pro honors last season.

The Dolphins received three comp picks, including the first comp pick assigned after the third round (No. 97 overall). The Rams received two comp picks, including the No. 100 pick overall. The Jets received one comp pick, which is No. 107 overall.
