Leclerc builds Crash: Russell in the second Mexico practice session in first place

At the second training session in Mexico City, George Russell is unstoppable. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton has to be content with third place. The crash of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc caused a longer interruption.

Mercedes driver George Russell set the fastest lap in the second free practice session for the Mexican Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Brit relegated the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda to second place after an hour and a half on Friday. Third place went to Frenchman Esteban Ocon in the Alpine ahead of Formula 1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Silver Arrow.

Only then did local hero Sergio Perez and world champion Max Verstappen from the Netherlands follow in the Red Bull. However, the results are only of limited significance because the teams run different programs. Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin came in twelfth, Mick Schumacher was 17th in the Haas.

Charles Leclerc caused an almost twenty-minute break. The Monegasque, who was still second behind his team-mate Carlos Sainz in the first practice session, spun in his Ferrari and hit the barrier with its rear end. The car had to be towed back to the pits.

Leclerc is in second place behind the old and new champion Verstappen. Going into the third to last race this Sunday, however, he is only two points clear of Perez.
