West Ham - with Germany international Thilo Kehrer in the starting eleven - were awarded a penalty for a foul by Liverpool's Joe Gomez on Jarrod Bowen after video evidence. The fouled man kicked himself in shortly before half-time, but keeper Alisson parried the shot and held on to the Reds' victory even in the wild final phase. Liverpool thus improved to seventh place in the Premier League table for the time being.
Chelsea dropped points for the first time under new coach Graham Potter. At local rivals FC Brentford, the Londoners only managed a goalless, performance-related draw with national player Kai Havertz in a fast-paced game. Chelsea remains fourth in the table after the 0-0 draw.

Fred (47th minute) and Bruno Fernandes (69th) scored at Old Trafford for the hosts, who left Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench. Fernandes scored a second goal a good ten minutes later, but it was disallowed for being narrowly offside. The Spurs missed the jump to the top of the table due to the defeat.
