The Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz won the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells (California) by dominating the Russian Daniil Medvedev (7-6, 6-1) in the final on Sunday March 17, as in 2023. Alcaraz (20 years old), world No. 2 , winner of the US Open 2022 and Wimbledon 2023, lifts his first trophy in 2024.

The Spanish prodigy wins his 5th Masters 1000 title and will be the favorite in Miami, a tournament which begins Wednesday for men, and where he triumphed in 2022.

The Serbian Novak Djokovic, eliminated in the 3rd round at Indian Wells, will however remain world No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday with more than 900 points ahead of Alcaraz.

A duel that got off to a bad start for Alcaraz

The 20-year-old Murcian did not attack his title defense well on Sunday, making a lot of mistakes, and taking a quick break from Medvedev in the first set. But he quickly broke down and found his rhythm, in a tense first set.

Between magnificent points and quick faults, the two players fiercely contested the tie-break, which finally turned to the advantage of the Spaniard on a fault from Medvedev after a long exchange (7 points to 5).

Sometimes angry with the referee, the Russian then lowered his guard, suffering from the power of Alcaraz, author for example of a winning forehand at more than 160 km/h at 3-1 in a second round that was ultimately one-sided .
