Zecherin (dpa / mv) - Because of a bridge test, the southern access to the island of Usedom (Vorpommern-Greifswald) via the federal highway 110 and the Zecheriner bridge is only accessible to a limited extent. A construction traffic light has been regulating traffic over the bascule bridge on weekdays since Monday, according to a spokesman for the State Office for Road Construction and Traffic. The reason is a comprehensive review of the Zecherin bascule bridge, which dates back to 1931 and is therefore more than 90 years old.
The holiday island of Usedom has only two roads to the mainland: the B111 in the north via Wolgast and the B110 in the south via the Zecheriner bridge. There are regular traffic jams on the B111 in Wolgast at times of heavy traffic.
The Zecherin Bridge crosses the Peenestrom, which runs between the mainland and the island. The bascule bridge is opened from time to time to allow ships free passage between the Szczecin Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Usedom is Germany's second largest island and is also very popular with holidaymakers from Berlin and Brandenburg. The restrictions should apply until March 17, but not on public holidays and weekends.
