The planned deforestation of 130 hectares of forest for the "Eldetal" business park in Grabow is heating up tempers. The Greens in the state parliament accuse the state government of Manuela Schwesig (SPD) of greenwashing.
Schwerin/Grabow (dpa/mv) - Criticism of the plans to clear 130 hectares of forest for a business park on the A14 in Grabow (Ludwigslust-Parchim district) is now also coming from the state parliament. The Green MP Jutta Wegner accused the red-red state government of greenwashing if they promote the planned commercial area as a "green industrial area" with millions. The politician criticized that economic interests were given priority over climate, nature and environmental protection. The planned compensation plantings in many different places could never compensate for the ecological services of the contiguous forest area that is to be cut down.
The environmental organization BUND has already objected to the approval of the deforestation of an initial 40 hectares. According to a decision by the city of Grabow, the commercial area is later to be expanded by 90 hectares. The entire area is currently forest.
The economic politician Wegner doubts that the "Eldetal" business park is needed at all. In Schwerin, 45 kilometers away, there are still 200 hectares of open space in the publicly funded "Göhrener Tannen" industrial park, she said. The project in Grabow could reduce the chances of occupying the areas in Schwerin with companies. There are plans to build a feeder road to the A14 for the industrial park in Schwerin in order to improve demand for the commercial space offered there.
The BUND also sees no need for the industrial park in Grabow. The environmental impact assessment has named other locations as more suitable, explained BUND state manager Corinna Cwielag. According to the state forest law, forest may only be cleared if projects cannot be implemented on other areas.
