North Rhine-Westphalia: Libori start: city and church celebrate nine days

Paderborn (dpa / lnw) - After a two-year break due to corona, the people of Paderborn will celebrate Libori again from Saturday to July 31st. Saint Liborius is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, the city and the cathedral in which his bones lie. The folk festival is considered the fifth season in East Westphalia and is a mixture of church celebrations and worldly pleasures with a funfair. It is one of the oldest and largest in Germany. The city and archdiocese of Paderborn are catching up on an anniversary from 2021 this year. The Libori Fair and the Libori Meal are held for the 500th time.

Traditionally, the mayor opens the festivities on Saturday (4:30 p.m.) in front of the town hall by tapping the keg of beer. On Sunday, the reliquary of Saint Liborius is paraded through the city center in a traditional procession. For the 500th Libori meal on Sunday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will come to Paderborn and give the speech to invited guests in the historic town hall.
