Explosion in Madrid embassy: Letter bomb in Spain alerts Kyiv

The letter is inconspicuous. But when a security guard opens the envelope, it explodes. The incident at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid ended lightly. Nevertheless, there is alarm in Kyiv.

A letter bomb has exploded on the premises of the Ukrainian embassy in the Spanish capital Madrid. According to initial findings, a security force was slightly injured, according to police sources. The letter exploded when the security guard opened it in the embassy's garden, Mercedes González, a representative of the regional government in Madrid, told Telemadrid TV. The man was slightly injured in his right hand.

The letter was addressed to the ambassador and was delivered by the postman in a standard envelope, González said. According to information from police circles, investigations have been started. Journalists from the AFP news agency observed how the area around the embassy was cordoned off.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba ordered increased security at all Ukrainian embassies, a ministry spokesman told online networks. He also called on the Spanish authorities to investigate the attack. Kuleba said whoever was behind the attack would not be able to intimidate Ukrainian diplomats or stop their daily work to strengthen Ukraine and resist Russian aggression.

Spain has supported Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression, particularly militarily. In addition, given the Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure, Spain recently also delivered power generators to the Ukraine.
