The fire broke out in a building on the avenue d'Espagne, Anglet, just before midnight, and lasted for about two hours. The fire spread to the second floor, which houses five people.
Three fire hoses were quickly used by firefighters to put out the flames. The apartment belonged to a 58-year old man.
The building contained 21 apartments, which housed 32 people. They were evacuated. Some of them were rehoused by the City of Anglet in emergency accommodation.
At this point, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
