Baden-Württemberg: "Danger for democracy": protest against AfD in Offenburg

Offenburg (dpa / lsw) - The state chairwoman of the GEW education union, Monika Stein, has described the opposition party AfD as a "danger to democracy". "The party's programs and actions divide, stir up fears and damage the trust and structures of our democracy," said Stein on Saturday at a protest against the AfD state party conference in Offenburg, Baden.

The alliance "Stand up against racism Offenburg" had called for the rally. According to a statement, the state chairwoman of the GEW (Education and Science Union) also spoke on behalf of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB).

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring the AfD state association as a suspected right-wing extremist since July. The secret service can thus examine the right-wing populists more closely and, under strict conditions, observe members, monitor phones and recruit informants.
