Baden-Württemberg: "Life and Death" fair for the first time in Freiburg

Hardly any subject is as taboo as death. At a fair in Freiburg, dying and mourning should be discussed impartially. It is also about young people.

Freiburg (dpa/lsw) - In Freiburg, the "Life and Death" fair with around 100 exhibitors will run for the first time from (today) Friday. The event about death and grief has been in Bremen for 13 years, project manager Meike Wengler reported on request.

Until this Saturday (October 22nd), among other things, coffins and urns designed by artists will be on display. Wengler promoted a taboo-free approach to the subject of death. For example, coffins could be painted by relatives to say goodbye in a personal way. "People are afraid of death. It's about encouraging them," Wengler told the German Press Agency.

The trade fair premiere in the Black Forest metropolis is particularly about children and young people. In around 40 lectures and readings, the topic will be how to talk to young people about death in an impartial manner.

Churches that are already included in Bremen should also be added in Freiburg in the long term, said Wengler. She did not want to make a forecast for the number of visitors. Around 5,000 people came to Bremen before the corona pandemic, most recently there were around 4,000 visitors in spring. The event in Freiburg is aimed at both trade visitors and interested citizens.
