Champions League thrashing: Wolves warm up for FC Bayern

The women of VfL Wolfsburg have made a successful start to the Champions League season - and can even save energy in the easy win against the Austrian champions. It will be needed more urgently at the weekend.

The women of VfL Wolfsburg mastered their debut in the Champions League without much effort. Thanks to a superior performance, the Lower Saxony team deservedly defeated the Austrian club KKN St. Pölten, also known as "wolves", 4-0 (2-0) on Thursday evening. The dominating Wolfsburg women should have scored even more goals.

Attacker Ewa Pajor put the favorites (8th minute/ 15th) in a good starting position with her two goals. Austria's series champion tried, but had little chance against the superior home team. Lena Lattwein (56th) scored the third goal for coach Tommy Stroot's team in the second half. Shortly before the end of the game, midfielder Jill Roord made it 4-0 (90').

For Wolfsburg it was the eleventh win in a row across all seasons and competitions. "We had the great advantage that we made it 3-0 early, of course, to simply control the pressure and ensure that we were able to make one or two changes relatively early on," Stroot said afterwards. "That's an important factor - also in all games that come in the future. That's what we were hoping for and we had planned one or the other change accordingly."

On Sunday (2 p.m. / MagentaSport), VfL welcomes its biggest competitor FC Bayern Munich to the top game in the Bundesliga. In the last meeting, VfL beat Munich 6-0 and later became German champions. After the fourth day of play, VfL Wolfsburg is currently two points ahead of FC Bayern.
