Baden-Württemberg: Mannheim chemical accident: second expertise commissioned

Research into the cause of the Mannheim chemical accident drags on. The investigations of the public prosecutor's office are now being accompanied by another expert.

Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - The public prosecutor's office has broadened its investigation into the causes of the Mannheim chemical accident with 17 injuries. Around seven weeks after the accident, another report was commissioned, said a spokesman for the prosecution of the German Press Agency. Thus, an expert in dangerous goods logistics and an expert in materials testing are involved in investigating the causes. The latter carries out analyzes on confiscated barrels with hydrosulfite. Toxic fumes had escaped from these.

"We do not expect a result until December of this year at the earliest," said the spokesman. So far there are no new findings. The authorities are investigating unknown persons because of the suspicion of negligent bodily harm.

The investigations take place on the premises of the Ludwigshafen-based chemical company BASF, which wanted to send a container with the bleach for the textile industry to Turkey. The company sells several thousand tons of it every year. The damaged cargo in the container was 22 tons. Recovering the contents was a difficult maneuver because the heated container had to be cooled for a long time to a temperature that allowed opening.
