Baden-Württemberg: Many property tax declarations are still missing

In Baden-Württemberg, the deadline for submitting the property tax return is not extended as in Bavaria. Nevertheless, the country is still accommodating. Many explanations are still pending.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Even a month after the deadline, many owners of properties in the southwest have not yet submitted their property tax returns. The German Press Agency learned this from the Ministry of Finance. For property tax B, 85 percent of the declarations are now available. The deadline ended on January 31st. "We are currently in the grace period," the ministry said. "Anyone who has not yet made their declaration should do so as soon as possible. Then there are no negative consequences to fear." In the next step, the tax office will send out reminders. These will probably go out after Easter. A total of 5.6 million properties are to be revalued in the southwest.

From 2025 onwards, a new property tax calculation is to apply. The Federal Constitutional Court had demanded this, because the tax offices recently calculated the value of a property on the basis of completely outdated data, from 1935 in East Germany and from 1964 in West Germany. Almost 36 million properties nationwide now have to be revalued for the recalculation.

According to the Ministry of Finance Minister Danyal Bayaz (Greens), there is still time until March 31 for the tax on agricultural and forestry assets (property tax A). Then a reminder will follow here as well - probably towards the end of the second quarter of 2023. In the case of property tax A, around 20 percent of all declarations are currently (as of February 28th), the ministry said.
