Baden-Württemberg: Ministry: No money from the state for school laptops

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Ministry of Education in Baden-Württemberg still sees the municipalities as having a say when it comes to procuring additional laptops for students and teachers. The state government has therefore not earmarked any money for this in the draft for the double budget, the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Tuesday) report.

A ministry spokesman announced on Monday in Stuttgart that equipping the schools is the responsibility of the school authorities. "That's why there were and are no funds in the Ministry of Education's budget for the general procurement or maintenance of end devices." However, the spokesman referred to ongoing talks within the framework of the finance commission of the state and municipalities. It is clear that the digital pact for schools and its additional programs have increased the requirements for replacement procurement, maintenance and support.

Meanwhile, harsh criticism came from the Baden-Württemberg City Council. "Nobody can seriously expect that the digital equipment of 133,000 teachers and thus about half of the state staff will become a municipal school authority task out of nowhere and without any funding," said Norbert Brugger, head of education at the municipal umbrella organization, the newspapers. The state must now decide on the digital school of the future, and thus also on the further equipment of teachers with digital devices and their financing, Brugger demanded.
