Baden-Württemberg: student representatives: compulsory testing and voluntary mask wearing

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - If the corona numbers increase in autumn, the state student council is in favor of a return to compulsory testing in schools in the south-west. The committee announced on Wednesday in Stuttgart that wearing masks in classrooms should remain voluntary. If a mask requirement becomes necessary, one demands “a sole mask requirement in the meeting areas”. In addition, if the number of infections increases sharply, all schoolchildren should be tested for the virus again - "regardless of whether a vaccination certificate is available or not".

The primary goal must be to keep the schools open for as long as possible, said the deputy chairman of the committee, Berat Gürbüz. Otherwise not only the quality of the teaching would suffer, but also the mental health of the students.

Minister of Education Theresa Schopper recently left open whether there could be a mask requirement in schools again if the corona situation escalated. That depends on federal decisions. But she definitely wants to avoid school closures. These should "no longer occur," said the Green politician.
