Baden-Württemberg: Wolf tore calves in the Waldshut district

Bernau (dpa / lsw) - Several calves discovered dead or injured in August in the Waldshut district are attributable to a wolf - it was probably even one and the same. The Ministry of the Environment announced on Monday, citing the Forestry Experimental and Research Institute (FVA), that samples had been taken from the cattle. The samples came from six young animals from the area of the municipality of Bernau. Five of the calves were found dead and a sixth animal was found injured.

In two cases - one of the dead animals and the injured calf - it is already clear that the male wolf with the designation GW1129m is responsible. A wolf also killed the other four calves. "It can be assumed that these events are also related to the Wolf GW1129m," it said. A calf that was slightly injured in Ibach in the same district in July had already been shown to have been attacked by the male.

Bernau and Ibach are located within a so-called wolf prevention development area in the Black Forest. The Wolf GW1129m is said to have been resident there since June 2020. In the development area, animal owners are supported by the state, for example in the purchase or maintenance of pasture fences and livestock guardian dogs.
