Bavaria: Association: Insect mortality as a life risk for garden dormouse

Nuremberg (dpa/lby) - Many specimens of the garden dormouse, which belongs to the rodents, could not survive hibernation this year. The Bavarian Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) warned of this on Friday. An important reason is the death of insects, which means that the animals lack food to eat enough fat for the winter.

Garden dormouse are related to the larger dormouse and hibernate during the cold season. The decline in animals such as insects, spiders and snails means that they are often too thin to survive into spring. Climate change is also a threat to garden dormouse. In warmer winters, the animals would wake up more often, which would drain their energy reserves.
