Bavaria: climate activists leave the lecture hall of the University of Regensburg

Regensburg/Erlangen (dpa/lby) - After occupying a lecture hall for days, climate activists left the University of Regensburg on Friday. That's what one of the students involved said. In Erlangen, the activists wanted to occupy a lecture hall until Friday evening.

The actions took place at the same time as the UN climate conference in Egypt. Students at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg decided on Tuesday afternoon to occupy a lecture hall, according to a statement from the students. "We're staying here in the lecture hall for now. In schools and universities we can't just ignore what's happening around us right now," a student was quoted as saying in the statement. In Regensburg, the occupation of the lecture hall began on Wednesday morning.

The University of Regensburg declared on Wednesday evening that the activists would be provided with a platform in the lecture hall until Friday. University President Udo Haken met representatives of the group on site. "They present issues that are in the interest of all of our future. These issues are more than worth getting involved with and identifying with," he explained.
