Bavaria: Expert warns of the dangers of mountaineering

Munich (dpa / lby) - The alpine law expert Klaus Burger calls on mountaineers not to put their pride above safety. "Turning back is hard - especially when selfies or self-portrayal in social media play a role," he told the Munich Merkur/tz media group (Friday). "My message is: Have the courage to give up when you realize it's going to be risky."

He knows "from personal experience what a fight it can be," said Burger. "Especially when a dream stands behind the ascent of a summit. But even a dream is not worth having an accident."

A rescue from the mountains could be expensive, emphasized Burger, who was chairman of the German expert group for alpine accidents and is head of the Bad Reichenhall mountain rescue service. "For large-scale operations, the costs per day are limited to a maximum of 2,500 euros."
