Bavaria: Mainfranken Theater: New team of architects for renovation

Würzburg (dpa / lby) - More than half a year after the announced separation from the previous architect's office, a new planner has been found for the renovation of the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg. "The new office will take over the remaining object planning and supervision until the completion of our construction work and will start work in the next few days," said the managing director of the theater, Dirk Terwey, on Tuesday.

"We are not planning new things now, but are implementing the planning status that has been worked out." The new team of architects also had to tender for missing construction work and trades. "After the massive disruptions in the construction process so far and the cost development so far, there will certainly be a transitional period before all processes have settled down again."

In the spring, Terwey announced the separation from the previous architectural office in Hamburg - "due to its poor performance in the planning and implementation of our large-scale construction project".

The theater, which is to be converted into a state theatre, has been closed since the summer of 2020 so that the house built in 1966 can be renovated. In addition, it will receive a new small venue with 330 seats. This small house was originally supposed to open in autumn 2020, but according to Terwey the next spring is now the target. "The building is basically finished," he said. However, rehearsals could only take place if the current structural acceptance tests in the new head building were successful. It is about fire protection and occupational safety.

The renovation of the existing building is expected to last well into 2026. According to the first plans, the main theater building should be reopened this year. In 2018, 72 million euros were estimated for the work. Since autumn 2021, 103 million euros have been in the pipeline. When the new planners have familiarized themselves, there should probably be news on costs and dates in the spring.
