Bavaria: Munich decides to tighten diesel driving bans

Munich (dpa / lby) - The Munich city council has decided to expand and tighten the driving bans for old diesel. However, there should be far-reaching exceptions, as can be seen from the decision on Wednesday afternoon. Up to three stages should ensure that the limit values for nitrogen oxides in the city will be complied with in the future.

In a first step, starting in February next year, the Mittlerer Ring will be part of the environmental zone. So far it has only been its outer limit. In addition, diesels with the Euro 4 emissions standard will also be subject to the ban in the future, even if they have a green sticker. However, there should be exceptions, including for residents, delivery traffic, craftsmen with a parking license, employees in shift work or nursing services, as well as for doctor visits or moves. There should also be further exceptions for cases of hardship.

If the first step is not sufficient to comply with the limit values, the next step should come into force on October 1, 2023. Then diesel engines of the Euro 5 standard would also have to stop in front of the Mittlerer Ring, but the exceptions would continue to apply. If the limit values are still exceeded, the third and final stage will follow on April 1, 2024. The general exceptions for residents and delivery traffic would no longer apply.

The basis of the decision was an agreement with the Verkehrsclub Deutschland and the Deutsche Umwelthilfe, who had sued the city.
