Bavaria: Par for students at Bavaria's universities

Munich (dpa / lby) - Almost exactly the same number of women as men study at Bavaria's universities. The proportion of women among the total of 403,435 students in the current winter semester is 49.4 percent, according to the State Statistical Office in Fürth on Tuesday. According to the latest data from 2021, the number of successful exams was even 50.8 percent. Around a quarter of the female students completed a degree in the so-called MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology). At the same time, almost 24 percent of the professorships were held by women.

While women have made up more than half of all students at universities for ten years, the proportion at universities of applied sciences (excluding administrative universities of applied sciences) is significantly lower. After all, it has increased over the past decade from almost 40 percent in the 2012/13 winter semester to almost 44 percent now.

Female graduates accounted for slightly more than half of the 78,626 successful degrees in the 2021 examination year. In the MINT subjects, their share was almost 32 percent - an increase of 3.4 points over the past decade.

In the same period, the proportion of women among university staff rose significantly more significantly: while in 2011 only 16 percent of professorships were held by women, in 2021 it was around 24 percent. This means that almost 1,800 of the 7,500 or so professorships in Bavaria are in the hands of women. This Wednesday is Women's Day worldwide, which aims to promote equality in politics, business and science, among other things, and to strengthen women's rights.
