Bavaria: Street cleaning in Munich goes on strike during carnival

After two lean Corona years, there will be Helau and Kamellen this year: Bavaria's fools are partying again. In many places the parades are already over, in others the highlight of the Fifth Season is yet to come. In Munich, confetti and camels could stay longer.

Munich (dpa / lby) - Carnival was canceled in many places for two years, now Bavaria's fools are celebrating again. In Munich, at 11 a.m., the market women want to dance again at the Viktualienmarkt for the first time. The traditional highlight of carnival in the state capital dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The ladies from the fruit, vegetable, cheese or snack stand ensure a good mood with dance numbers to well-known hits. In addition, the people of Munich celebrate in the old town under the motto "Munich foolish" - on Tuesday is the final sprint of the three-day party.

In Munich, rubbish, confetti and camels should remain on the streets after the hustle and bustle. The Verdi union called on street cleaning workers to go on warning strikes on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Collective bargaining for the public sector continues on Wednesday and Thursday. Verdi explained that the strike at the climax of carnival should make visible what it would mean if there were no street cleaning. The employees are in the lowest income groups and therefore earn little. However, their work is hardly noticed in everyday life.

In many cities and communities, the big parades of clubs and carnival societies are already over - on Shrove Tuesday the hustle and bustle is coming to an end.

There are also carnival celebrations in some ski areas, such as Sudelfeld near Bayrischzell, at the end of the foolish season. Boarding fans in historical attire and equipment are expected there for the "Nostalschi" event: wooden skis, leather lace-up shoes - and whatever other nostalgic things the cellar has to offer.
