Bavaria: Winegrowers' Association presents harvest balance

Veitshöchheim (dpa/lby) - The Franconian Winegrowers' Association will announce figures for this year's wine harvest on Friday (10 a.m.). The winegrowers had to contend with a particularly severe drought this year. The harvest volume in Franconia could therefore not quite reach the level of earlier vintages, the winegrowers' association predicted at the start of the harvest. The final harvest balance is presented at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) in Veitshöchheim (Würzburg district) in Lower Franconia.

In Franconia, wine is grown on 6200 hectares, mainly white wine. The wine villages around the Main loop near Würzburg have also become a tourist magnet. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a higher harvest is expected nationwide this year than in previous years, despite the drought. The reason for this is minor damage from hail, storm and frost, as well as the irrigation of young vines.
