Canada's internet outage due to'maintenance.

Rogers, Canada's biggest mobile and internet provider has apologized for the country-wide outage that began Friday.

Tony Staffieri, the CEO of the company, stated that the failure was due to a "maintenance update in our core networking".

Friday's blackout affected transport, banking, and emergency services. 911 hotlines were unavailable and ATMs were not available.

Canadians flock to libraries and coffee shops to make connections.

The service outage started at 04:30 GMT (08:30 GMT), Friday. It lasted more than 15 hours. However, most services are now restored.

Staffieri stated that some routers had malfunctioned during maintenance on Friday morning.

Canada's wide range of services were affected by the outage, which served as a reminder of how dependent society is on modern communications.

Many 911 services experienced difficulties receiving incoming calls. Hospitals asked their staff to return to work until the problem was resolved.

Lara Morgan, a mother, shared her struggle to get emergency services in touch after her son suffered a spinal injury during a rugby match.

She spoke to Globe and Mail about her experience. She said that she finally found someone who had a non-Rogers phone to call 911. However, she discovered that the Rogers network was used by ambulance services, which were having difficulty dispatching paramedics. She was able to get her son to the hospital, and he was not seriously injured.

Staffieri stated that the company was "particularly troubled" by some customers not being able to reach emergency services.

The outage caused several events to be cancelled including The Weeknd's Toronto tour. Rogers Communications owned the Toronto Blue Jays' home, where the gig was to be held.

A Montreal court delayed a trial hearing in Quebec for Peter Nygard, disgraced fashion mogul. Officials at the jail couldn't connect Nygard to a videoconference system so the Montreal court had no choice but to hold it.

Critics claim that the outage showed the need for greater competition in Canada's telecoms sector.

Rogers, BCE Inc. and Telus Corp control 90% of Canada's market share.

Rogers is the only mobile carrier that serves nearly 11 million Canadians. It also has a stake in everything, from cable television to hockey.
