Eminem knows: 50 Cent is releasing "8 Mile" as a series

It's been two decades since Eminem's "8 Mile" brought rap fans in droves to the big screen with his underdog story. While the film still has classic status among hip-hop fans, 50 Cent wants to bring out an update for the new generation.

According to Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent, he is currently in the process of making a TV series out of the cinema classic "8 Mile". The rapper, actor and film producer revealed this in a conversation with radio host Big Boy. "I'm going to put his 8 Mile on TV," said the 47-year-old. His friend and mentor Eminem, on whose life the film is loosely based, is of course in on it and on board with the idea, he lets shine through in the interview. "We're on the move," 50 Cent describes the current work status of the new show.

2002's "8 Mile" tells the story of Jimmy (Eminem) who makes ends meet with a job in the auto industry and lives in a trailer park in Detroit with his alcoholic mother and little sister. His great talent is rapping, so he tries to compete with other rappers in battles in the evenings, but he can't get a word out on stage. An inner and outer struggle begins. Eminem won an Oscar for the title track "Loose Yourself" in 2003. Even though he had several film appearances afterwards, such as in "The Interview" (2014) or in the series "Entourage" (2010), "8 Mile" remains his biggest foray onto the big screen to date. To date, the film has achieved cult status as one of the best films about hip-hop.

50 Cent wants to honor that with his series, in the interview he continued that the series will be big and that he will deliver 100 percent. He is probably referring to his successful "Power" series, which is running at Starz and has already resulted in several spin-offs.

When asked why he wants to make 8 Mile a series, he said, "I think it should be for [Eminem's] legacy," the rapper said. He also talks about Eminem's representative role, understanding the rap cosmos as an integrative place, beyond skin color and origin, "something that everyone can enjoy," says 50 Cent.

The rapper, who also played some concerts in Germany in 2022, explained that the planned 8 Mile series will be a modern version of the film. "Imagine a new version of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". He wants to show a lot more details, things they would say in an interview and all that would affect the characters, their temperament too, he concluded. Unfortunately, there were no answers in the interview about Eminem's role in the production of the series or whether he might even have an appearance in the series. But there is a small subordinate clause, 50 Cent also plans to create a cinematic monument to his rap colleague Snoop Dogg. Unfortunately, the project was put on hold. But he wouldn't lose sight of it.
