Florida Holiday: Ex-soldier is jailed for the rape of a 12-year-old girl

An ex-solider was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the rape and molesting of a Florida 12-year-old girl.

Matthew Mackie, age 68, from Twechar in East Dunbartonshire attacked her during a family vacation in Orlando in 2002.

For rape and attacking a girl aged seven years and a woman, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A jury from the High Court in Glasgow convicted him. Lady Stacey said to Mackie that he didn't seem to understand the severity of the crimes.

Mackie was on vacation with his partner in Florida during the summer 2002, according to the court.

The girl, also from Scotland was staying in the same hotel as her family. During the holiday, their families shared time together.

Mackie was accused of raping the girl in her hotel bedroom and then continuing to prey on her in Scotland.

He promised her "pocket cash" for his work in Barrhead, Renfrewshire and took the girl to Arbroath, where he owned a holiday caravan.

Mackie raped his ex-partner between 1999 and 2004, according to the court. This was in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.

Mackie also assaulted a seven-year old girl in Twechar, between 2012 and 2019.

Mackie denied the allegations, but Angela Gray, the prosecutor, accused him of "making up as he pleases".

Defence QC Iain McSporran stated: "My instructions to him are that he maintains all his innocence."

Mackie was found guilty for raping the 12-year old girl, indecently attacking his ex-partner, and assaulting another young girl.

Judge Lady Stacey stated that "when these things happen to children it also has an impact on them later."

Mackie was also placed on the sex offenders' list indefinitely.
