Hesse: 144 kilos per inhabitant: the amount of organic waste in Hesse is increasing

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - In Hesse, around 144 kilograms of organic waste per capita were collected last year, which is 11 kilograms more than in 2020. According to the Ministry of the Environment in Wiesbaden, the total volume of organic waste was around 909,000 kilos (2020: 835,000). According to this, around 68 percent of this comes from the bio bins and 32 percent from the municipal collection of garden and park waste.

As the ministry also announced, about half of the public waste management authorities in Hesse have implemented full or partial biowaste fermentation. The aim is to initiate further fermentation plants for biogas production.

The current figures also show that there is still potential: According to this, around 255,000 tons of organic waste collected via domestic waste collection ended up in the fermentation plants last year, which corresponds to around 41 percent. According to the BDE Waste Management Association, biogas plants currently cover around one percent of Germany's gas requirements.
