Hesse: FDP parliamentary group for municipal European commissioners

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - According to a proposal by the FDP parliamentary group, every Hessian municipality should appoint a European Commissioner. "The background to this is that European work is becoming increasingly important for the districts, cities and municipalities, because more than 70 percent of the regulations adopted in the European Union have an impact on the municipalities," explained the spokesman for local politics, Jörg-Uwe Hahn Tuesday in the state parliament in Wiesbaden.

European politics is largely local politics, he argued. However, it is often difficult for municipalities to access European funding. Reasons include the great effort and lack of staff. As a result, municipalities are giving up money that they could use to implement a number of things, Hahn explained.

According to a draft law by the FDP parliamentary group, the European Commissioner should generally work on a voluntary basis and not be bound by instructions. In municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, this task should be fulfilled full-time.
